Burnaby is east of Vancouver and is the third largest city in British Columbia (after Vancouver and Surrey), with a population of approximately 223,000.

The city was named after Robert Burnaby who had explored the region around Burnaby Lake in 1859. A merchant and businessman, Robert Burnaby was active in a variety of community affairs and helped develop much of the west coast. The city has over 200 parks including favourites like Burnaby Mountain Conservation Area, Central Park, Confederation Park, Deer Lake Park, Kensington Park, Queen Elizabeth Park, Robert Burnaby Park and Stanley Park. Burnaby Mountain, elev. 370 m, is a low, forested mountain in the city of Burnaby, British Columbia, overlooking the upper arms of Burrard Inlet.

Singer Michael Buble, actor Michael J. Fox, NHL Hall of Famer Joe Sakic, and national soccer team player Christine Sinclair are all famous Burnabians.

Burnaby is home to Simon Fraser University (SFU) a public research university.

SFU is consistently ranked as one of the top comprehensive universities in Canada, placing first in Maclean’s annual University Rankings more than 15 times since 1993.

Helen ‘the Swinging Girl” neon sign was installed in 1956 in what is now known as The Heights shopping district and was approved as a civic heritage landmark in 2010. The landmark is known as one of the best examples of kinetic neon art in North America and is included as a destination on local neon tours.
